At Bezzia we will teach you today how to choose the perfect avocado.
Avocados are not cheap, so it is very annoying not to get it right when we buy them, to have to wait days for them to mature or even to have to throw them away. That's why today we give you four tips to help you know how to choose the best avocados in your fruit store or supermarket and enjoy them at their best.
How to choose the perfect avocado
When buying an avocado, the ideal is to do it in a fruit store and trust the professionals to choose one with the optimal degree of ripeness, depending on whether you want to consume it on the same day, in two or in three. However, we know that this is not possible, so we encourage you to take note of the following four tips to choose the perfect avocado:
Choose the avocados individually
Although especially in supermarkets it is possible to find containers with four, five or six avocados at very attractive prices, our advice is that you choose the avocados one by one. Not only is it very difficult to evaluate the state of maturation of an avocado in a container, but it is also very likely that not all of them are at the same stage of ripeness and you will take home some that are past or that you cannot take advantage of.
Look at the color
Hash variety avocados are one of the most popular in our country. These avocados have a bright green color when they are hard or unripe and are They darken as they mature. At the optimal moment they usually have, in fact, a very dark color, almost black. Not all avocados, however, are like this and we cannot always trust the color to guarantee the degree of ripeness.
Touch avocados without damaging them
The best way to know the ripeness of an avocado is to touch it. An avocado can look bad and be delicious and vice versa. And yes we know that it is not ideal to touch the fruit, but we will always try to do it with gloves and of course, in one place and without squeezing too much so as not to damage the avocados.
To know the degree of maturity you must lightly press the avocado on the stem part, at the top where the stem was. If it gives slightly, it will indicate that the avocado is just right, while if it gives excessively and you notice a creamy texture under the skin, it will indicate that it is overcooked. What if it's hard? The piece will take a few days to be consumed.
Remove the stem
Remove the stem that connects the fruit to the tree or what's left of it and looking at the color of the interior is another way to evaluate the ripeness of an avocado. If it is ripe and at the optimal time of consumption it will present a yellowish green color. If it is too dark, it will indicate that the avocado is overcooked and if the color is very yellow, the avocado will still be green.
Is it green? Accelerate its maturation with these tricks
If you have arrived home and the avocado is a little stale, there is little you can do other than take advantage of it to make a guacamole. But what if it's green? If your avocado is like a rock, there are some tricks you can use to consume it as soon as possible:
- Keep it wrapped in paper. If you want the avocado to finish ripening, put it in a paper bag or cover it with newspaper and place it next to the fruit, next to an apple or a banana. These fruits release ethylene, which accelerates the ripening of the avocado.
- Put it in the oven. Do you need to use that avocado now? Heat the oven to about 90 degrees Celsius and place your avocado wrapped in aluminum foil. Take a look every 10 minutes until you feel it soft, then it will be ready to use.
